Hey guys,

Looking for some opinions here. I have decided that I would like to try F-TR shooting and have been doing some research on which rifle to pick. I have actually made a decision on the rifle I would like to go for: It's the Savage 12 F/TR in .223.

The problem I have is that there doesn't appear to be any Canadian source for this rifle. I have seen it on Cabelas web site, but only in .308.

My question is this - because the F/TR is so hard to find, am I doing myself a huge disservice if I change my choice to the Savage 12 LRPV in .223. This still looks to be a good long range choice and there is not much difference in price but it looks to be easier to actually get hold of one.

So....hold out for the F/TR and just keep looking - or go for the second (but more available) choice.

Try the Gun Dealer in McCaddam New Brunswick. they are a Savage dealer/ I am also looking for a Savage and chose a 22-250 with a 1-9 twist/ They have it on order for me

At this point if you want something to shoot in 2013 you might as well go used if you can find one, or spend a bit more for custom with components that are in stock in canada!
Otherwise, hello 2014.

Best of luck in your decision.

if you can find a savage withe the target action and a 1 in 7 twist I would buy it.

I own a f/tr in .223 and I'm not a huge fan of the stock, I don't like the lame plastic cheek rest.

the only difference between the long range precision .223 and the f/tr is the stock and barrel length, so if you can find that one just buy a new stock later with adjustable comb and bipod rail in the forend and you will be much happier with it

I bought my Savage 12 223 1"7" twist from Ellwood Epps. It took a few months to get it in but once it was here they had it to my door before 24 hours and the price couldn't be beaten.

If you just want a .223 then do what you gotta do to get one. If you want to use the rifle for F-Class then you are just better off with the 308 and that is probably why you are having a hard time finding it in .223.

If you examine the scores in an F Class match you will see the .223 shooters score right up near the top in the 300 yard events but move slowly back in the pack as the distance is increased. The guys with the 308s tend to do much better as the distance increases.

You don't want to shoot F/TR, you want to shoot F Open. Big ass Magnum, mean recoil, short barrel life, and a muzzle blast that could make you punch drunk. That's right none of this fairy .223 crap. Head on over to the EE I'm sure you can find a great foundation to build on.

Just kidding about the magnum, well not really, but if I was to give my honest opinion .223 with a 1-7"/8" twist barrel is what you want .I'd agree with the above about .308 Win being better choice as I believe it's easier to load for. .223 with heavy high BC bullets seems to be a little tricky to get right. 80 gr match bullets worked really good for me though and you can shoot a .223 ALL day long.

As far as how to get it, you can order and wait, or start by picking up an in stock .224 match barrel from one of the Pimps (Mystic or Juan) and go from there. You should be able to put something together in a few weeks. In fact if you wanted a 7mm RUM. You could get a 1-9 twist .284" 32" barrel and some goodies off the EE and have all the parts by Friday. The only thing that might hold you up would be a gunsmith to cut your chamber, screw on the barrel, and headspace it.

It is my belief that the 223 is not a beginner's choice for F-TR. The amount of equipment and knowledge required to make a 223 shoot competively places the cartridge in the expert level IMHO. I would reccommend the same rifle in 308 as the others have already discussed.

How about the 12 LRPV in .260 Remington? Model: 12 Long Range Precision

Series:Target AccuTrigger:Yes AccuStock:No Magazine:Detachable box Stock material:Fiberglass Barrel material:Carbon Steel Stock finish:Matte Barrel finish:Matte
Stock color:Natural Barrel color:Black Sights:n/a

Features:
HS Precison Fiberglass Stock, Target AccuTrigger

The .260 is an accurate, efficient cartridge, easy to load for. Unless using the .223 cartridge is the ultimate goal. That's cool too.
