Sticky 870

I bought an 870 Super mag (synthetic) a few weeks ago and finally got out last weekend to shoot trap. However, I found that when trying to eject the cartridge, it kept locking up; to the point where I had to put the butt end of it on the ground and giver all I had! This happened probably just under a dozen times out of 100 rounds; I was using Winchester target loads, I also used Challengers but they didn't jam once.

Aside from sticking to the Chellengers (which I probably will anyways- I think their Canadian made?), what can I do so that this doesn't happen again?

Has anyone had this problem before?

Lots of newer 870 express have this issue with the cheap lower aluminum shells. Stick some steel wool on a wood stick and add some oil put it I a drill and polish the chamber.

I had the same issues with Winchester target loads. Just stop using them. All I use now is Remington target loads, buckshot and slugs. Also Challenger slugs works well. My 870 has 400 - 500 shells through it and still jam with Winchester target once every 8 - 10 shot. Thanks for the "Q" Stoop14, I will consider polishing the chamber.

Very very common issue. As stoop said, can be reduced by polishing the chamber. Inspect and possibly polish the underside of the barrel hood, too. Mine had a surprisingly large burr after several hundred rounds.

I got lucky. I got a new 870 last week and it shoots the cheap Winchester target loads without extraction issues.
