Hah! I bought a can of this stuff as well, in case I needed to continue experimenting. I tried the acetone first only because xylene supposedly does not dissolve in water nearly as well, whereas acetone dissolves easily and evaporates very quickly. But the xylene is now in my arsenal. This much better than acetone.
Used it to remove the gooey stuff off the car removing decals

Yep, the cornstarch/talcum idea is by far the fastest and easiest solution. When it got wet I needed to re-apply a bit of powder to some spots; that takes a few seconds.I just saw this thread. I’m going to have to try the cornstarch. I have a Browning shotgun that’s sticky as hell, and I really don’t want to go through the hassle of sending the whole gun in to Browning.
My stock has panels of checkered rubber in a couple spots for added grip, and of course this makes the powder idea a bit messier and more visible. If it weren't for those areas I would likely have settled on powder as the permanent solution.
