still bugging me

If I could get some opinions on the following I would appreciate it. Some time ago I was in a gun shop and asked to see a SIG P220, the owner, not recognizing me as a regular customer( as I have never bought from him before) asked me if had any ammunition on me. I said no sir and I looked at the pistol and bought it. After I got thinking why did he ask me if I had any ammo, is this a common question? No, as I have never been asked this before and have been buying guns for 30yrs. from many different shops, your thoughts?
 
I think it is just a safety precaution on his part as he does not know you! Personally I would not be particularly concerned about it, it seems like a reasonable question in this day and age.
 
If something like that bugs you how do you get through life, it was a simple little question, be reasonable and answer it or be unreasonable and don't.
 
Just curious, but did he ask to see your RPAL? I would have expected that question to come first.
On a second note many clubs when they are doing the club orientation, or instructors when they are giving a firearms course ask that question right at the beginning of the course, every day.
Could be just force of habit.
 
Sounds like the shop owner was just exercising some caution.....he may have had a bad experience in the past and was just being careful around a customer that he was not yet familiar with.....
 
Its a dumb question. If I intended to rob the store by using his guns and my ammo(and magazine) my answer would still be "no". If I had ammo and did not intend to rob the store my answer would be "no".

As for the pal question, you don't need to be licensed to handle firearms. Another bs myth perpetuated by those who think they know.

He was just being cautious, I understand. when the ATT came thru to pick up the gun, I usually trigger lock the gun and throw a lock on the manufacturers case and take it home but he insisted I purchase a separate gun box with combination lock as he read from the code that this box can be easily broke into! I discussed back and forth and in the end I wanted to get out of there so I purchased the extra box. Broke less than a month later. Just talking here not complaining need something to do before the wife comes home from work, thanks for the comments.
 
I know of two cases where gun shop owners were asked what kind of ammo the gun would take. As the proprietors were selecting various types, the creeps loaded the guns in question and robbed the stores.

But in that case you would be lying. It is widely believed that most people when lying display common indicators in their tone and/or body language. If he thinks he knows the signs it is reasonable for him to think asking the question will be a useful precaution.

So he forced you to purchase an additional item before he would give you your property? It is not his buisness to make sure you comply with transport regs, that's your buisness. What store was this? It would be nice if the rest of us could avoid being blackmailed.
 
OP if I were you I'd be more bothered by the having to buy an additional case before getting MY property than I would be about the ammo question. Like has been pointed out, could have had a bad experience or just a force of habit. However telling you that you have to buy an additional case before being able to leave is just stupid. If he thinks that you have to have that additional case then it should be included in the price of all guns already, or else he should be giving them out for free.

I'd like to know as well.

I would have brought the case back to him the next day and asked for a refund that's for darn sure!
 
Ya that's bull####...I constantly have employees at gun shops "insisting" I buy their locks and cases to leave their store even for non restricted!! They usually give up after I kindly remind them of the transport regs.

I've seen them get away with it on other unsuspecting customers though and it makes my blood boil...seems like a sneaky sales tactic to me.

Only place I've had seemless transactions is Gagnon Sports. Just show your PAL pay for the firearm, they wrap it in plastic shopping bags for you and off you go!
 
Actually both the ammo question and the extra case combined bugged me, the ammo thing was the first that got things rolling. I don't want to mention the stores name but if you have been there you would know which guy I am talking about, some people I have said they would not step another foot in his store.

Do you seriously believe the gun shop sales guys have that kind of training?

I agree. Pretty petty complaint, I wouldn't even consider it an inconvenience. These days I would be cautious about handing someone over a pistol that wasn't trigger locked. As for the additional case I would have been pissed and would have asked for a refund for selling you that piece of junk.
