stock 10/22 barrel mods??

I have number of 10/22's that I have built up. But I would like to keep my DSP fairly stock. Since we do not have the luxery of sending one state side to CPC or Que, I was wondering if anyone has tried to mod one to make it shoot better.

I have posted on Rimfire but got very little response.

I have "heard" that you can mill 2 thou off the receiver end of the barrel and recamber with a Bentz chamber then recrown. This is suppose to significantly improve accuracey.

Anyone done this? Or have any other advice?

Thanks. Looking for something to ply with. I have 3 barrels to screw up.

I have heard that as well. It might have been on RFC or perhaps this forum. I only remember there being a debate as to whether you could still claim it as a factory rifle.

I've played with a few 10/22's and I think the best thing I've found to inprove there shooting is to support the barrel out at the front of the forend. This seems to be better than floating or any other tricks i've tried.

I have had good success rechambering and recrowning 10/22 barrels. With a decent bedding job they will shoot 1/2" groups fairly consistently at 50 yds. One drawback to a tighter chamber is they don't always eject a live round.

Or is it one of those things that is fine as a hobby but would be excessively time consuming to do for a economical price???

10mark22: so did you cut the chamber back 2 thou and rechamber with bentz?

Lodi: not sure I understand your post? Are you saying to remove the front barrel band? DSP does not have one. You have removed the front sight and then done what?

Mine has had the estchewan (sp?) trick done. It is free floated with a rubber pad for foreend pressure and trigger is nice and light. No other mods so far.
 
No not the barrel band. The front sight is dovetailed into a larger diameter section of the barrel. It is this "band" I'm suggesting be removed. On some barrels there is a tight spot in the bore through this section and removing the "band" may help accuracy.

I typically remove .140" from the chamber end, then run my bentz reamer in until whatever ammo I'm going to use engages the rifling about .060". Then the comparable amount needs to be added to the length of the tenon. Chambering for specific ammos is not an exact science, but it does work. Removing the sight band is not a good idea, it can be machined down though. A bentz chamber is still longer than I like to use.

After the chamber is recut, the vblock notch will require a spacer to take up the space from the removed material. I have done barrels for other people, but more is required than just modifying the barrel. In my experience, the factory profile barrel requires bedding to get the most out of it. So if barrels are recut, the owner does need to have the necessary skills to take it to the next step. This is one of the reasons that just buying a new barrel and putting it on doesn't always net the same results as it will with bedding as well. Not always the case, but most of the time. Taking a stock barrel and making the chamber tighter nets amazing results, 1/2" groups at 50 with AE22's or Xperts is possible, and really cool. The stockers are made of good material, just require some TLC to make them better.
