I've noticed that shotgun stocks tend to have a steeper angle than rifle stocks, so the butt is lower relative to the barrel. What's the reason behind this? I thought the more in line it was the better, to reduce muzzle rise. All I can think is that shotguns are less likely to have a scope which means the barrel needs to be higher to position the sights correctly.
