Hi: Has anyone tried bedding a stock with anything other than the commercial kits? IE: JB Weld etc. What did you use for release agent? Thank's

I use Devcon (Acklands Grainger part #DVC10110, $65.10 for a 1 pound tub) and Pam cooking spray as the release agent.

I have used JB Weld and Marine-Tex as bedding compound and for a release agent I have been using Mothers Liquid Carnuba Wax.

I brush a couple of coats of the wax onto the action, brush on one coat, let it dry and buff it off with a clean terry cloth rag and then repeat (in case I missed some of the action the first time). This will not only release nicely but it will not leave a film between the action and the bedding giving you a 0 tolerance bedding job. I also brush it into the holes and crevices in case some of the bedding gets where it is not supposed to, this helps the dried compound slip right out.

I use Devcon 10110 as well. I buy it at General Bearing Service in Ottawa. It's $35 for 1 pound kit. If I bed the action only, the 1 pound kit will do 3 rifles.

For release agent I use Kiwi neutral shoe polish. I put it on and buff it (repeat 2 times), as mentioned in an earlier post.

Devcon 10110 as well. Beyond being easy to use, it is nice to be able to have a bedding job set-up and taken apart in about four hours. Waiting for bedding to set is right up there with watching paint dry.

I use Devcon as it is the best consistency for the job and for a release agent I have tried quite a few and none have come close to plain old shoe polish! Kiwi shoe polish! It goes on thinner than anything I have used and releases very well.

I also use Devcon and for the release agent, I use Johnson's Future Liquid floor wax , being liquid it goes everywhere and I can dip the action bolt in it

I sell a product called Pro-Bed 2000 designed specifically for bedding rifle's by Charlie Robertson of Score Hi Gunsmithing. It's the best product I have used to date.

For a mold release I use a product called Crown #3470 Reliable Release, Mold Release For Epoxy. Made by Aervoe Industries, just spray it onto your action and barrel and you are set. I believe Acklands Grangier carries it.

I've used JB Weld (available also in 5 oz. tubes, which is a better deal). Also PC Metal Epoxy, which comes in a kneadable tube- just pull off what you need and knead thoroughly. It sets up very FAST (< 5 mins) but is useful for small jobs where a thick, putty-like consistency is useful. I built up a recoil shoulder in a Husky 9.3x57 with it and it worked well.

Birchwood casey gun wax is an excellent release agent. It comes in a small bottle and is just about liguid in texture. Just use a q- tip and apply, it sets up in minutes. I use it on all the bedding jobs I perform. Works every time no mess clean up is easy. Also If you are going to bed a gun or repair a stock, I have used acura- glas by brownells for a lot of years, and it is by far, I find the superior product out there.

What does a guy do if he has a beautiful wood stock with a very poor glass bedding job? First what is the best way to prep stock to rebed, and second how does a guy get a nice even bedding line under the barrel where your bedding will end? This stock is bedded all the way to where the barrel starts to taper. The bedding line is not straight like some rifles I have seen bedded. Does a guy put some sort of false partition where you want your bedding to end so the line is nice and straight? Not sure what you use or do to achieve this. Thanks in advance!
