Stock Bedding Materials

The important feature of bedding material is the shrinkage when it sets. Most epoxies shrink too much to be a good bedding agent. This is why we use AcraGlass and Devcon. They don't shrink much.

Devcon putty is available with various metal fillers. It is sold by the pound. You get the most Devcon F putty for the dollar by buying Devcon - aluminum.

A poor release agent will spoil your day. I like liquid wax and spray on silicon mold release. I used to use Pam, years ago, but they changed the formulation and it did not work hardly at all. A disaster. Don't forget to treat the action screws.

There are nooks and crannies in the action you want to keep clear. Plastercine will plug them.

I roll Plactercine 'worms' to make a dam in the barrel channel where I want the compound to stop.

To prepare the stock I Dremel away about a tenth of an inch of matterial, leaving a small ring of untouched wood around each action screw so the action will sit at the correct height and orientation. I also drill short 1/4" holes at an angle in action to give the epoxy some anchor points.

Devcon

I use Devcon steel and natural Kiwi shoe polish for a release agent. So far the 1lb container of Devcon has done about 5 rifles. The cost is about $10-$12 per bedding job once you factor in all other materials.

Nicest part is the bedding job is done right and just the way I want it done.
