stock cleanning

I preffer something a little less mechanical myself, but it also depends on how 'clean' you want them.
If they are just a little grimey then you can use a cloth with some oil to rub them down. If they have some dried crud on them, some fine steel wool, 00 for example, and gently wipe them down.
You can also use wood shampoo and other products for cleaning wood.
If you want to do a semi-tough job, a 3m patch, and some warm mildly-soapy water will do.
You can also rub them down with most good citrus cleaners.
the dishwasher is to me stripping, not cleaning. Raises dents, no kidding. Hot water or steaming will raise bruises, dents, and lift stamps. If you don't want to go that way be careful.
For most stocks I clean some warm water, a little dish detergent and the 3m pad are plenty good.

I find some of the authors piece on the dishwasher a little light. I have indeed experience wood drying out a bit, and cracks getting worse. on one I cleaned this past week the stock had small cracks, after cleaning it relatively mildly, and leaving it to dry those cracks have opened up very noticably.
Stick to something less harsh if you aren't refinishing. if your making a crib board, throw 'er in LOL

I use Isopropyl 99% alot, but not really for cleaning per se. It is not that great a grease cutter. To remove a little, or prep before staining etc maybe, but for cleaning a good dish detergent works the best I find.
