I read the recent thread on crack repair, and wonder if anyone could recommend a top notch gunsmith for this kind of work. I have a nice double barrel shotgun with a small 1/4" crack starting near one of the tang screws. It looks totally stable now as I can't get it to open or close at all even with quite a bit of force, but I'd like to find someone who can glue it up in as stable and invisible a manner as possible. I'm in Ontario, but don't mind mailing the stock elsewhere.

Thanks,
Dave

using a small drill drill the end of the crack, soon, this will stop it spreading. Using a wood match, stain the wood the same colour as your stock then making sure it is a push fit add wood glue & tap, lightly, the matchstick in. You will end up with some protruding. You now need to cut the wood flush & do a little refinishing. It is easy, rewarding & will save you a fortune!

Can you post a picture of your stock. Type/model of firearm. There are special techniques to do these repairs. I don't reccommend drilling out or chasing cracks as they generally show and quite often worse than before. Might result in someone taking on the job.

I deal with this sort of crack in a different fashion, that is not visible externally. I will remove the stock, and rout a small channel across the crack, inside the inletting, then epoxy a small roughened or threaded rod in the groove. This creates a reinforcement that spans the crack, locking it.

I'll second that
