I just bought a 1908 Brazilian Mauser and I'm hoping to get some advice/opinions re the stock finish. The wood looks like brand new but unfortunately, someone has applied a high gloss varnish (?) finish. I have not removed the stock yet, but the underside of the handguard and the areas under the barrel bands look like bare wood to me. I'm hoping to find out what the proper finish would be and how I would go about removing the gloss finish.

Varnish can be removed with a stripper.

Original finish was a reddish oil finish based on Linseed Oil.

This is still available from Mauser/Oberndorf as their regular Schafttoel (Stock Oil).

Likely someone might import it, or you could order a small bottle from Germany. Not terribly expensive and it's The Real Thing.

Comes in bottles from about 2 ounces, up to 5 litres.

Hope this helps.

remove the varnish with varnish remover, then apply raw linseed oil until saturated, wipe off the excess and let dry for a few days.

Thanks for the replies. Smellie, I looked online and found a gunsmith in BC (Bits Of Pieces.com) that is a distributor for "Schaftol." Their description of the product states SCHAFTOL® is an all-natural product developed by Prussian craftsmen 75 years ago, as a finish for their premium guns. Not quite the same spelling as you gave, but I would assume it is the product you are referring to??
