I bought a used Beretta 686 Sporting Clays. The stock was too short, and seems to make the gun shoot low for me. I have to be right on the bird, almost covering it on straightaway. I got a used trap stock for $75, but think it is a bit high. I am unsure whether to go at it with spokeshave and try to whittle down or have an adjustable stock made. How do you experiment to find right height? Pattern on target? Does anyone have an adjustable stock for a 686? Who, and how much to make one? Is a kit available? Where & how much?

Beretta makes an adjustable comb stock for the 686E, and provides a series of various length butt pads for it as well. Or, you could get a Morgan adjustable butt pad and mount it on your trap stock. Raising the pad will effectively lower the comb. Altering the trap stock is an option, but I would advise doing so with the aid of an expert. Small changes to the stock can mean big changes to the point of impact. You can do it yourself, you need a patterning board, lots of shells and some patience.

I had two spacers and a thick recoil pad in the original stock, but it looked like s**t and was too low to suit me. I don't mind butchering the trap stock as I got it for $75. The length on it is fairly good with the recoil pad, but I think it is high. If I make a determined effort to push my face down tight on the stock it seems better, so I probably don't need too much off, but would like to know the cost alternatives if I bugger it. I have a feeling I wouldn't like the price on the new adjustable stock from Beretta. Some of the guys have had adjustable combs put on their stocks, but the trap stock is a bit proud of the metal, so I am not sure I want to spend a lot on it.
