Hello folks, my dad has a Howa 1550 in 30-06 that the stock has finally given up. He got it used and it had a slight crack behind the action, probably should have looked at it then but it never happened. A couple of chunks finally chipped off.
Anyhow, I'm looking for a new (used) stock. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the stock used on this rifle is similar/the same to some other rifles( Weatherby I think?). Anyone have any insight or know where I could find out? Or is anyone looking to sell? I will be posting in the WTB as soon as I figure out what to ask for. I appreciate any info.

Cheers

You can use a 1500 stock, but they need to be opened up for the wider magazine on the 1550. About 1-2mm on either side.

Why not just buy a decent one like a Bell&Carlson stock - our lower priced ones like the laminated stocks from Boyds? I never cared for the stocks Howa includes.

I looked into Boyds, it was going to be $300+ for the cheapest stock and I was hoping to spend less than that. The stock that was on it worked fine for the amount of use it gets, so I don't see any need to spend a lot on it. I realize that would put me into the used category, so I was just posting to see if there were more options than just the stock specific to that rifle. Thank you for the ideas, I'll look into the Bell and Carson.

I bought a 'cheap' bell and carlson for a 1500, since 1550 stocks dont really seem to exist. So to my door the better part of 400$, plus I then needed it opening up since the mag assembly is bigger, that with glass bedding pushed it to close to 600$ total. Frankly it would have been cheaper to buy a cheap 1500 stock, and new bottom metal, like the detachable mag kits. Or to shop around and just buy a whole new Howa 1500.

So someone has offered me a stock off of a Smith and Wesson 1700 30-06 for a decent price. From research(could not find much) and from pictures it seems that it will fit my Howa 1550. I would appreciate any insight, or if any one can confirm this.

It should fit. If not let me know, i have a spare 1550 stock i could let you have. The finish is crazed, but otherwise fine. I think the 1700 stock looks better myself
