I recently took possession of my dad's Savage 340 A chambered in .30-30 Winchester. Anyone know where I could get a replacement stock (maybe a used one) for this rifle. I have looked at Boyd's in the US, but I am unsure if they ship to Canada. It's such a great little gun that I want to use it this hunting season, but I am pretty sure the stock I irreparable. :(

I hear ya. I once upon a time had a 340 in 30-30, I loved that little gal, but these old eyes need optic's now and I don't like off set ones and besides, I shoot left. I hope you can find a stock and save that sweet pea. Good Luck.

Thanks for the tip Maddog. This was my first deer gun and I love the old girl. Haven't shot it in years, but with a new stock that won't be a problem :). It's a bit of an odd duck because it has the Stevens "butter knife" bolt handle and is drilled for a peep sight, but is not drilled and tapped for the offset scope mount. I will look around a bit more, but Boyd's it might have to be.

I used to have a 340 that I mounted a Saturn scope to, 2.75X.

Sold the gun but kept the scope, gonna put it on a 340 222 when I find one.

That is one cool little optic Maddog!

How timely! I'm about to start restoring a 340A that I bought some time ago. Mine is pre serial number and it has those two little screws at the back of the reciever. Can you buy a scope mount for those or is that a home made jobby? I was under the impression that there was no way to put a scope on it. I was going to purchase a semi buckhorn sight for the rear sight as the original is terrible. Any one have any tips for scope mount?

My friend made one in woodworking shop (Grade 11, iirc). He laminated the wood himself, did all the inletting and shaping. It looked...um...like a kid in grade 11 made it. :)

Mine has what looks like a slice of watermellon made of wood laminated to the stock to make a cheek piece! I'm going to chissel it off and sand it down and in the end it too will probably look like a kid in grade 11 made it.

Picked up similiar at a gun show last year, fortunately the stock was in great condition. Stripped it and refinished the stock, will do rebluing soon. Stocks ocassionally show up at gun shows. Mine came with a proper scope mount & scope so I'm happy. Keep your eye out on the EE for mags - Brownells has new ones but will not ship to Canada as the Manufacturer doesn't have the export liscencing. @ $40 to your door IF they were liscensed as opposed to used ones in various condition at gun shows for up to $65.00

Might as well give an update to this thread. Decided to go the epoxy route with this stock, as I didn't really want to buy a new stock and fit it right now. Opened up the crack and laid Gorilla glue two part epoxy to it. Seems great now. Upon putting the action back in the stock however, it seems the ejector will not function (doesn't eject cases). The extractors work well, but I read somewhere that sometimes the spring either falls out or is weak if old. Any thoughts from you savage guys out there. As always, appreciate the help.

For those of you who do take the ejector apart, don't accidentally drop the ejector spring in your shop. 20 minutes later on hands and knees I found it. On the plus side, the ejector works great now.
