It has been suggested that the stock is from a US M1917 30 cal military rifle. I guess my question now is, if it is true, should I chop up the wood or leave it intact in case somone is looking to de-sporterize a version of this weapon. Any comments?

Original Query

Acquired this stock intending to use the top third for missing wood on my Snider Enfield. After reading a number of threads on here, I am wondering if it would be better to preserve it in its current condition so that it could be used in someone's restoration project.
I'm not sure if it is even Milsurp but it has a butt plate similar to the Lee Enfield.
Can anyone help with its identification? Should I just chop it up to use for the Snider?

Anyone else having trouble with the link? Seems to work for me but I have been told it isn't working.

I would say don't chop it up just yet. If you have a positive ID on it, Post it here or on the EE to trade for what you are really looking for. I'd hate to see an original piece of history get chopped up. Someone here might have exactly what you are looking for.

Photo link doesn't work for me.
I can't see the point in cutting up an intact M1917 stock to restore a Snider. I'd just start with a piece of walnut.

To be honest, chopping up anything to make something else seems a bit odd to me. Once chopped, the item you're using it for will just be a restore job, and whatever the wood was before will be worthless. I can't see the pic either, but I'm betting it's worth a lot more in unbubba'd condition.
