Hello. I’ve got myself a M70 from my dad in 300 win mag and would like to find a different stock for it. I’d like to shoot it more and work on some hand loads and use it for long distance target work but the wood stock and the recoil are making it hard to reach for in the safe.

I don't know of any chassis for the Winchester M70, but mcmillan, manners, wildcat, and Bell and Carlson make traditional style synthetic stocks for it. What's your budget?

I find Winchester stocks with the monte carlo on them very recoil aggressive. I have switched out all my 70's to either the safari style, the mcmillan (yes, they sold them on certain models) or the target stock. Helps a lot with perceived recoil. - dan

You can add a picatinny rail section most stock such as this one https://www.accu-shot.com/catalog_new/accessories-official-manufacturer/64-bt15-335-1913-rail.html

I'm going with a wilcat stock for a build I'm doing with a extra metal block in the forend to attach the picatinny rail section. Mine is getting finished by a gunsmith so he will do the final fitting and painting.

Not too worried about budget if it softened the blow enough to shoot more. A stiff synthetic with a great butt pad and some rail to mount a bipod would be nice

I've got an extra Accuracy Innovation stock for a Model 70. Laminated with bedding insert, Limb saver and ready to bolt in. These things are stiff enough to put most synthetic after-market stocks to shame; which isn't hard since once you leave the McMillans and equivilants most of them are about the same as a bunch of chewed bubble gum with a bit of fiber mixed in for whatever the advertising agency can make sound good. Ended up with two of them a while back through industry friends for a great price and could pass those savings along.

HS Precision M24

I built and bedded M70 in an H-S Precision Pro-Series M24 Vertical Grip stock with a hunting profile barrel. It has an Uncle Mike's Ultra-Mag recoil pad which soaks up recoil a little more than the hard rubber butt pad that the original stock came with. It comes in at under 400USD so it can be imported from the US.

Does the rifle have a one piece or two piece bottom metal? That can add some cost if it needs to be opened up or converted. I have an HS Precision with a sporter barrel channel I pulled off a two piece bottom M70 due to featherweight contour - massive gap around the barrel. They have a two-screw solution for aligning the barrel to the action though which is pretty neat.
