stock refinishing

Depends who you talk to. I am totally sold on Tru-oil. Tru-oil can be applied to give any appearance from "in the wood" oil finish to super high gloss and doesn't take forever to do. Perseverance and elbow grease are called for though.

Tung oil will not build up like tru-oil will, tung oil will penetrate until it can't anymore and you have to wipe off the excess, after it dries(24hrs) re-apply.

I just did a stock in Tru-Oil and it looks awesome! Gave it 4 coats and it has a nice glossy finish. Just waiting for my stock wax to come. Unfortunately, this stock is for a buddy of mine :(

Neither is really better. Just different.
Tru-oil is a brand name from Birchwood-Casey. It's a blend of linseed oil and other un-identified oils. It's a quick commercial wood finish.
Pure tung oil is a natural wood preservative made from the nut of a tung tree. It has been used for centuries to water proof boats in Asia. It does take more rubbing to get the best finish, but it dries into a hard nearly water proof finish. The more coats you rub in the shinier the finish.
