Picked up a nice old Mossberg bolt action 410 and have decided to refinish the stock and reblue everything.
Off to the local gun shop, pick up a Beechwood kit that contains "everything needed." Get home, start reading and discover that I need to buy a stripper to remove the existing finish. Any suggestions on a good stripper, I have no clue as to what the existing finish is?
Thanks

I use Circa 1850 Paint Stripper.

So far, I haven't found anything that will stand up to it.

Just paint it on the stock, wait for the finish to bubble up, scrub the mess off with medium steel wool and wash using a garden hose with lots of pressure. You can use a stiff tooth brush to clean the finish out of the checkering.

Wear rubber gloves during the process - the stripper is murder on skin.

Let the stock dry of a few days before starting to finish.

I've used oven cleaner. Works well but really smells and the wood seems to be sort of greasy even after lots of rinsing. Ended up just sanding all the crap off and refinishing it from there.

Sooooo, maybe don't use oven cleaner
