I have an 1887 Martini Henry I recently started cleaning up. It was caked in a thick dark grease that was more solid than anything. As I cleaned the stock I noticed a small crack aprox 1" in length and small piece of wood missing (I have the piece it was bonded to the receiver by that thick grease stuff) . On other rifles I have just opened the crack a bit, glued, and clamped. This wood will not flex easily I am worried the amount of pressure to get this to open up a bit is going to make it crack more. (It really is that tough to get it to flex) . The recoil plate bolts even hold nice and tight in the wood.

I intend to shoot this from time to time and won't just be a wall hanger.

Ignore the bit of glue (I wanted to see how easy I could get into this crack when I saw it wasn't going to be easy I stopped)

The wood is in far better shape than the images may look. it's extremely solid

Can anyone recommend someone (preferably in Vancouver, GVRD type area) that does repairs like this. I am debating attempting to try myself or just get it professionally done.

Thanks!

That 'crack' I think is a natural 'check' in the wood...it develops over time. I don't think it will clamp together and stay there. I doubt you will get the grease out of it easily either... you can always cover it back up with the grease and ignore it... I know it isn't a job I would take on.

I am fine with covering it up was worried about shooting it in this condition. there is a big metal recoil plate that goes in there. And you are correct even clamping it's a pia to get close to closed.

Wow fantastic job on that shotgun! Did you use a specific brand of CA Glue?

Thanks for the compliment. I just used stuff I got at Home Hardware. It came in tiny tubes like a toothpaste container. Watery kind, not gel. Just be careful with it. Like I mentioned in the other thread, it builds more than I thought.
