I may have posed a similar question some time in the past, but let me try again. I'm looking for a really competent gunstock person in the greater Vancouver area. I have a stock with really great wood that needs a little work. Can anyone point me to someone in the general greater Vancouver area that is super competent--and careful--with stocks?

It's getting more and more difficult to find competent stock refinishers that can complete the job in an acceptable time line.

You don't say what type of TLC your stock needs. If it's just a general refinish, there are some furniture refinishers that really do good work and are well worth looking into.

If it's bedding issues, then you need a stock maker/gunsmith type to do it right.

There are a couple of such folks on this site, such as Ian Robertson and a few others. It would require mailing/shipping of course but their work is excellent and their skills are well honed.

Barry at Bits of Pieces would likely sub contract the job to one of his employees or contacts, but you can bet the end result will be excellent.

I can recommend Gary Flach as well... In Langley and I think it is drop off and pick up in person... no shipping I believe. He does beautiful work.

It's wood, I sent mine to a small furniture refinishing shop, had it back in 2 weeks looking like new

FCD, that's fine if all it needs is an exterior refresh/resurface but not if he has internal issues with warpage or bedding.

Otherwise, that's what I would do.

Last one I saw was done by a fellow that refinishes antique furniture in Oyama, don't know him, have no idea what his contact info is, but I saw some stocks he did and they were flawless, with nice sharp edges and the checkering filled where needed and recut to nice sharp points.

They're just like most professionals, they can adapt to the situation as needed and it usually comes out just fine.
