Hello all. I know we have a number of amateur and professional stockmakers on this site, and was wondering if any of them might be interested in doing some work for me. I don't exactly know what a rifle stock costs to make, as such I do not really know where to start for budget. Does $1000 get me anything? I have four rifles I would like to have stocks made for.

Stock 1:

Remington 580 Singleshot custom
Heavy barrel
Benchrest type stock with very high comb to accommodate Sightron 10-50
Requires second take-down screw to be drilled and tapped.
Laminate
Ready to go.

Stock 2:

Ross MKIII/M10
Factory contoured barrel
Palma/Bisley style (optimized for shooting off elbows) stock with installation of adjustable butt-plate and comb. Iron sights only.
Hardwood/laminate
Requires new barrel + butt parts.

Stock 3:

Ross 1905 (future project)
Custom sporter barrel
Slim, light, sporter stock
Hardwood
Lot of work yet.

Stock 4:

Ross Cadet
factory barrel
light, slim, semi-target stock
hardwood
Ready to go.
Not willing to spend too much money on this one.

Hopefully that gives anyone interested some good info to chew on. If anyone can give me a rough quote on what any of these may cost, that would be greatly appreciated.

I could also use some consultation on what competitions my rifles would be eligible to shoot in. The 580 would obviously be some sort of rimfire benchrest of some sort. As for the Ross, I will be installing a Central rear sight and likely a RightSight foresight. I would like to use this rifle for casual shooting up to "1000 yards", but would also like to be able to compete in something if the opportunity arises.

Well.....usually when someone is looking for an "amateur" anything to do a job, that usually means "don't want to spend much"...that's probably why you aren't getting many responses.

Now that said, there are a few here (such as myself) that are "professional" stock makers that could help you...but like all pros, our time/skill is our livelihood....so it comes down to budget. Perhaps if you post what you want to spend you'll get a better response.

Fair enough. Let's do some edits here... and done. Hopefully my changes help.

The last stock I had made ( and it will be the LAST stock I have made) I was charged $400 for the checkering alone. It's easy to spend more than a $1000 on a decent piece of wood alone, plus you're paying for somebody's labour. If you had a specialized skill to peddle, would you work for minimum wage?

NO. And that's why a custom knife of mine doesn't cost $19.99. That being said, checkering is very labour intensive and a real skill to do, one slip and its all over.
A stock duplicator can bought or even made and is a real time saver for roughing a stock out. The inletting is the hard part. Getting everything to fit squarely and neatly.
Your choice of woods will decrease the cost of your stock somewhat, but the labour to carve out a $1000 piece of wood or a $50 piece of wood is the same. (Nearly) and the labour is the main stock cost.

Well, i'm not looking for fancy wood or checkering. The target rifles will have stippled or smooth gripping surfaces and all stocks will be made with "working gun" wood. I need the inletting, fitting and shaping expertise, and i can do the boring tasks of sanding, staining and oiling.

I'm looking for something like this for my Ross target rifle;
