Stockpile just one caliber?

Yeah the gen 1 American and Ranch are what I’d like to grab. Also might get a BCL in 5.56 or 223 Wylde if I feel spicy. I could see my wife complaining about the sharp corners on that, so I’ll get what makes us both happy first.
I've done a lot of "work" with mine. From paper, to steel, to vermin, to handing out dirt naps to a pile of whitetail. Other than big bears and volume of fire, I really couldn't ask for a handier tool, nor have i found anything that I would replace it with (at least in Canada), even at 3x the cost.

When Zombies need a load dump you want a 304 for the high capacity Shaiden Rogue. It's about all we have left that the OIC overlooked.

Not sure if your trying to increase your post count but this is a very silly question
This topic was covered long before COVID entered our lives.
Along with Mall Ninjas and the likes.
Guy is looking to stir the pot or is to young to remember such topics.
Not to mention a little lazy.
But, in the sport of good behaviour, buy it cheap and stack it deep...what ever your fancy is.
Tight Groups,
Rob

Anyone ever read the novel called Footfall? Equally likely situation to a zombie outbreak and would probably necessitate stockpiling something like 375 H&H or 458 win mag. That gets my vote.

Corrected for proper jargon (my father in law says “round”, and I think he’s rubbing off on me).

I’m a newbie, so please forgive me if this has been talked to death. Leaving shotgun ammo and 22LR out of the discussion, if you can only stockpile one caliber for when the zombies come, what would it be and why?

I know 5.56 rifles are hard to come by right now on a budget, but I like the interchangeability of mags and such. Thoughts?
Nice try government. I don’t have any freedom seeds at home.

Ammunition over time only gets more expensive so it's not a bad investment.

.375 H&H bought for $80 is now worth $150.

My ammo has appreciated better than many of my stock purchases.

And no capital gains taxes on ammo if you sell it.
No capital gains yet.
The way the govt pisses money away they are always looking for new revenue streams 😂.
I know what you mean on 375 H&H.
Pretty spendy.
Hang in there

About 10-years ago Dollarama had bags of 100 marbles for $1.(remember those $1.00 days? 😉) I cleaned out the Hfx stores and got about 20 bags.

ah yes Footfall its been a while. Interesting book

as for 'stockpiling ammo'

decide what you want to shoot buy the gun and have enough ammo on hand so if there is none on the shelf at the store for a year you have enough to shoot.

For zombies I've always argued that you wouldn't need more then .22. Get a browning buckmark rifle and a buckmark pistol, both using the same mags and caliber making it, pound for pound, the largest round count per pound of weight carried and interchangeable.
For "zombies" get a .223 or a 7.62x39...... though are the two most likely calibers you will ever come across scavenging in a centerfire round.

Pretty much doing what the OP says, but mostly 7.62x39 because I find the brass prep/cleaning step of reloading to be a pain in the ass.

7.62x39 surplus is cheap. Make or buy a couple hundred quality hunting rounds and you're good for life.

Course 223 totally works too

Ok I keep a lot of ammo for every caliber I shoot. I used to pay 10$ for a brick of 22LR now a brick on sale is 50$ or more. Ammo generally goes up in price so buying in quantity when you find a good deal lets you shoot more and more affordably.

Right now surplus 7.62x39 is the less expensive option but only for the corrosive surplus. 9mm is about the same cost. For non corrosive cheapest would be 223.

With all the bans going on you might not be allowed to shoot your stock pile.

My father's philosophy was to always have enough ammunition that you can reload something your potential enemy may drop. Enough to fight your way to more ammunition. So, I found stocks of 5.56, .303, 7.62 x 39, x51, x54R, 30-06, .30 Carbine, 7.9 Kurz, 7.9 Mauser, and assorted odd balls like Japanese, French, Swiss, Italian and historic. He also had most of the common pistol cartridges, which coincidentally are SMG ammunition. Did he genuinely need lots of random ammo? No, but it made him feel better.

For an average gun owner, I'd suggest the Holy Triumvirate of .22LR, 12-ga, and something suitable for big game. That's not a clear answer, but a realistic one.

I guess what ammo you keep on hand depends on who you perceive to be your most likely enemy. I even keep some 5.45x39 on hand

Find something you like to shoot, then get reloading it. As to capital gains, 1 # of IMR 4227 just as the plandemic ended was 60 + taxes. Now it's double. Your planning is kicking in very late. You unfortunately should have started, when the Fiberals took power. Having said that you're wiser starting today, than tomorrow.
