Hello fellow gun nuts. I am looking into purchasing a tactical shotgun and am having a hard time deciding whether to get a pistol grip or regular stock. The gun will be used for target, some clay busting, plinking in the woods and maybe kept under the bed for just in case scenarios. I was considering the remington 870 tactical express but I am open to other models, even an autoloader. What are the downsides to having a pistol grip? Is it more difficult to shoot? Thanks for your input.

I like both options, but the pistol grip makes me feel like a have a better control on the shotgun. I've always shot weapons with pistol grips so this is what I feel the most comfortable with.

I find a pistol grip more efficient and comfortable for ground level buck and slug work but not so much for wingshooting. Where pistol grips have problems is when folks use them to push the gun away instead of pulling back into the shoulder.

IMO a straight pistol grip is useless (for me), now if your talking a pistol grip with a butt like the ATI "M4" kind I have on my mossberg now your talking! I would prefer that over a rifle style grip like a normal shotgun has.

I use mine for a bit of everything, clays, targets, breaching milk jugs ect.

One thing I forgot to mention is trigger type, some shotguns designs have a trigger that pulls to the rear, while others pull on an angle up and back, pistol grips work more comfortably with the former while conventional stocks are more ergonomic with the latter.

If youre packin through the woods- go regular shoulder stock. Less to be getting caught and hung up whilst hiking ect... I went with the Dominion arms 8.5 bbl/ regular stock for my wilderness tool.

Thank you. Colt

The Knoxx stock is a fine addition to any shotgun, I have one on my 590 and I shoot everything with it from clays to shotgun matches with no problems

If you ever plan to do action shooting like 3 gun or something I think the pistol grip feels faster or easier to move around corners with and between targets. Not a huge difference for me but I feel I have a bit more control when shooting fast with a pump gun.

I just picked up a Remington 870 Tactical Express at Le Baron. With the discount club card and taxes in, I walked out with one for $418.43. Ordered a few things online as well, including Knoxx Stock Power Pak, railed foregrip and a Scabbard, should be in tomorrow if CP doesn't mess about.

If at one point you decide to participate in competition, pistol grip is a definite disadvantage - it will get in the way of your speedloader tubes (that's if you are planning to use them, they will give a great time advantage). I used to have a pistol grip stock on my Benelli M2 and changed it to a regular stock just to be able to use speedloaders.
