I am thinking of a glass bedding project (got enough books and dvd's showing me how to do it) but it is all done on wood stocks.

Is there a reason why usgi synthetics should not be glassed ?

Glass bed fun

I've done the glassbedding upgrade to all kinds of rifles into all kinds of stocks.... bed away !!

With the USGI glass stock, you will never ever have to deal with the inevitable "wood compression" that all wood stocks are vulnerable to. When you are shooting for 10 Rings at 600 yards away, every bit of confidence and stability helps the mental management and your shooting. :)

Use a great release agent, like PAM cooking spray applied with a cotton swab tip. Use very liberally (Oh, I just hate the sound of that adverb) on your reciever and trigger group during the clamping stage. Better yet, spray the entire trigger group. Some advocate stripping the trigger group and only re-assembling the trigger guard and it's corresponding pin.... I'm too lazy..

Hope this helps,
Barney

Excellent advice as always bernie. It is what i was hoping to hear as i have a couple of synthetics all ready to go with selector switch filled in.

I was planning on getting some acraglas gel from brownells (kit comes with everything incl release agent).Had any experience with it (or even the non gel formula ?)

Try to replace the L-word in your vocabulary with 'generously' or 'freely' or 'abundantly'.

Bedding Fun

dukeNukem:

If you've seen any of my VHS or DVD's on the M14 clinic(s), I'm a strong advocate for DEVCON which can be purchased from pretty well any Industrial Tool Supplier. :D Don't sweat about purchasing Brownell's specific Acraglass unless you happen to be placing an order already.

I've worked with both the Acraglass and it's Gel version, both great products. I prefer to recommend products that are readily available with the objective of reducing the intimidation factor. Yup, I have run across many M14's that have been tweaked, but very few that had been bubba'ed like many other Lee Enfields and Mausers. I'm a firm believe in "empowering" you M14 owners to tweak yer own M14 bangsticks. This brings your shooting hobby to a whole new level as you've witnessed on this forum / CGN board.

So back to bedding fun.... I've had great success with JB Weld resin or "Liquid Metal" that can be found in hardware stores since it's a 1:1 mixing ration.

DEVCON which is favoured by the US Marines requires a 9:1 ratio which can be intimidating to a newbie glass bedder, but in the end, the cured DEVCON can be drilled and tapped. Hey, it even attracts a magnet... That's how much powdered steel is in the compound.

Some other CGNutters on this board just love "Marine Tex" that can be purchased at you local boat building / boat repair shop near any harbour. I realized that in New Zealand, if you can't find a boat shop, you are in a heap of trouble. :p

Does any of this help ? yuk, yuk

Cheers,
Barney

Just checked out the Devcon, just wish it came in smaller amounts as $66.00 a can was a bit much. Might as well use up the left over Acraglass I have at home. Whats the best way to degrease the chinese stock as I'm putting a collapsible stock on it and saving the glass stock in original config...Bob
