Does anybody have any experience with these Benelli-licensed short recoil shotguns? Quality, price, reliability? They look pretty danged nice for the price.

I read a review of the Stoeger 2000 in an outdoors magazine a few months ago. There it was rated a "best buy", so that seems to be a pretty good recommendation.

That was one of the shotguns in my list for my first shotgun purchase.

As I mentioned in another similar post, the dealers who I spoke with about this shotgun all said that they had had no returns on it since it came out.

For the price I don't think you can go wrong (check out LeBaron's they had the best bargain on it) and I still consider it my first choice when I decide to go for a semi-auto (unless I get a major raise or bonus in the next few months ;-) ).

As you know it is a clone of the Benelli Montefeltro,

Had one would not feed properly sent it back and got a 870 :(

I think the feed ramp was offset as the rounds were jamming half in and half out, this would not happen on all rounds 2nd round 4th round not consistant.
There was allso scratches on the inside of the action right at the ejector and on the screw so i think this gun had been jacked with at one point.
the choke wrench was missing from the box as well.
I bought this new from one of our fine canadian retailers, and all the people that i had spoke to said they have never had any problems with these shotguns.
I tried diffrent manufactures of 2 3/4" with all the same results.

Got one, love it. Never had a problem with it using the cheapest federal/win bulk pack to quality 3" magnums. Always works flawlessly. I had put 2-300 rounds through it and figured it was time to clean the action. Couldn't believe how clean it was after that many rounds.

Does the recoil action soak up any of the recoil compared to a standard Remington 870?

Not really. Mine is synthetic so its much lighter than the wood stock 870 I used to have so there seems to be even more recoil. I've shot trap with it without getting a sore shoulder but I've shot approx 100 rounds one after another and ended up with a decent bruise.

OK, I've shot pretty much everything out there, and the stoeger 2000 is what I use.

Here is why.
1/3 the price of a benelli. SBE1 or 2
Just as fast
Just as light (maybe lighter)
3 lbs lighter than an 11-87, and still less felt recoil with comprible loads
Easy as hell to take down. (not quite as easy as the benelli, but much much easier than ANY gas shotgun I've played with)
It soaks up the recoil like a 10 lb shotgun (except on turkey loads)
Its vey slim lined in the forend and such. NO gas system to make the forend bulky like a bench rifle
The barrels are chrome lined, and the gun pattern well.
Feature for feature, there is nothing on the planet that will compare in price.

It comes with 5 chokes form the factory, all you need to add is a turkey choke, and a rifled choke.
It has the best rifle sights I've used IMHO on the 24 inch smoothbore barrel. (on a rifle or shotgun for that matter, but non aperature)
I did need to do a bit of fin fitting/ cleaning when I got it. I had to replace the factory plug, and the inside of the mag tube rusted.
Besides that, it is the best bang for your buck I've ever shot.
I've put about 2000 rounds through it, and yet to have a stoppage. Light loads or turkey loads, it eats em all.
