Looking at picking up my first semi auto 12g to train with and hopefully try some 3gun events. At this point I don't want to sink a fortune into one and I am looking at the M3k or 930 JM which are basically identical in price. Id like to install a pinned mag tube extension to fit 5.5 3" shells and 6 2.75s.

Reviews go both ways out there.. Anyone been around these enough to shift me one way or another?

Mossberg is gas, M3k is inertia. Both need extensions (US 930 comes with one, Canadian does not) unless you can get a US based one (a z tech armory carries them). The Mossberg is $200 more than the m3k (950vs750), but you can get US 930s with the extension on it for 950 as well (a z tech).

I run a m3k, I like it. Needed $25 in springs to have a good trigger but other than it's been great. But the new magazine Turkish fed semi autos are real slick, really cut down on reload times, especially empty starts. And Stoeger is turkish, so if you're considering that the derya/typhoon might be worth looking into.

Yet they are so darn slow if/when you need to switch between ammo types(shot/slugs/buck) during the course of a stage.

A tube fed gun the hands of a practiced shooter is slicker/faster more reliable and versatile than *any box mag fed shotgun I've seen in use.

*only exception being finely tuned Saiga's, but... they're not available/legal here in Canada.

The Mossberg will be way easier to get parts for.

The M3k is pretty well ready to go. Plus Stoeger/Benelli has a location in Ontario if you need parts...I've ordered from them before. The M3k also shares some common parts with the Remington VersaMax. I watched a friend struggle with both of his JM pros last year. He never shot a match without significant stoppages. He has an M3k now.

I owned 2 JMPROs, even with OR3GUN upgrades they did not prove reliable enough for me in matches. I purchased a M3K from Al Flaretys at the end of last season and it has been a much better shotgun in terms of reliability.

IMO:

JMPRO
Pros: faster cycling - simpler manual of arms - less felt recoil
Cons: picky with ammo - requires detailed cleaning to be reliable - won’t run relibably when wet, dirty, cold or when you need it most

M3K
Pros: shares many parts with Benelli for cheap upgrades - simple take down for cleaning - lighter - seems to shoot anything
Cons: extractor and spring must be upgraded - manual of arms are a PItA compared to the JM - more felt recoil

Buy the M3K, Jerry doesn’t even use the shotgun named after himself.

Remember under Canadian law that you can only have 5rds + 1 in the chamber, of the shell size it was made for, on a semi.

Correct me if I am wrong but my understanding is the 5 round capacity would apply to the longest shell length the shotgun can shoot. So, on a shotgun chambered for 3" shells, as long as you can not fit a 6th 3" shell into the tube, you are good.

I have read that a common Canadian competition shotgun mod is to pin a mag extension to fit 5.5 3" shells, following the 5 max in the tube law but this allows a 6th 2 3/4" to just fit in.
