Ok, we all know that a round of loose ammo that cooks off because of heat is largely harmless because of Newtons laws of physics. If the case is loose, the round doesn't really go anywhere. Here's the thing; surplus rounds on stripper clips packed tight in tin might offer enough "backing" to "shoot" a round, no? I've got 5000 rounds or so, do I need to have the block cleared if my house is on fire? Is it a hazard to fire fighters? Anyone every see what happens to a czech crate in a fire?

"...have the block cleared..." No. If, and it's a big if, a bullet gets out of the can, it won't have enough velocity to go far. There will not be an explosion.
"...hazard to fire fighters?..." Tell 'em there's ammo and let them deal with it. They worry more about TV picture tubes.

You know that you gain velocity with barrel length, up to a certain point. If you put a round in the fire and it cooks off, there is no barrel to channel the expansion of gases. Sure, the bullet may travel a short distance, but certainly nothing to clear the block about.
There are videos on the internet where they stacked crates of ammunition in a cinder block enclosure with roof and set it on fire. Not much happened.
