When you guys buy a few thousand rounds of ammo do you keep them in their boxes(I'm talking about retail boxes not crates) or do you dump them in Ammo cans?
I picked up 5000 rounds of .22 rimfire ammo from Cabela's on sale and a couple metal 50 cal. Ammo Cans(have rubber seals) and my thought was to dump the few thousand rounds of ammo inside one of them?
Good idea? Bad idea? Doesn't matter? Any precautions?

22 comes waxed I wouldn't store them in an ammo can without packaging keeping the rounds separate. Otherwise you'll have a sticky/waxy mess.

At least in the boxes you can just grab a couple when you are heading out. I hate loose ammo. When I do use my cans, I generally put 100rds. of 9mm or 45 in a zip loc freezer bag, that way I just grab a bag or 2 and go. For 22 you could just put the boxes in the can.

I tend to keep my .22 in the original box because I buy the bricks. For all other calibers I dump them into ammo cans and toss in a couple desiccants. Much easier to transport and keep track of.

Wasn't aware of that. Thanks.

I was figuring I'd do what you said. Grab a ziploc or a small plastic case and grab a few handfuls.

Desiccants! I need to get some of those. There is a video on youtube where the guys uses these. Seems pretty good for a few bucks and you thrown them in the oven to re-energize them.

Available at London Drugs and Vistek also. Link above is cheapest I could find.

You can get those desicant packs way cheaper at SAIL. 11 bucks last I looked. Brand would be lockdown. There are probably cheaper options as well. They don't hold together very well when dropped though. Need better corner crimps.

You can find enough desiccant packs for an ammo can or two in your garbage, shoes, electronics, even food has desipacks. They may be small but work fine. Throw them in the mic for 30 seconds or a minute (warm) to re activate them then put them in a open ziplock in your ammo can, as they tend to be basic (Iron oxide or a salt of some type) its generally a good idea not to leave the packet right on the ammo.
Or just move to Saskatchewan and package your ammo anytime it ain't raining for 0% humidity!!!

The costco cans came with silica packs in them :) I dump everything in cans for storage except .308 and 300winmag. They have MTM cases they go into then in the 50 cal cans.
Not sure about the wax on the 22lr rounds, I have been using them for 20 years and never felt any wax on my hands or had any problems storing them in cans...
I put my 22lr, 9mm and .40 in the small 30cal cans and .223, 12g slugs, 12 buck in 50cal cans. However the main reason I did not keep the 22 in the boxes was because they(federal blue box) would not fit properly in the 30 cal cans.

I just put the entire brick(still in the cardboard) into the ammo cans. It's easier to grab a specific box of 50 than a mixed up mess.

I leave everything in the original package and stuff it in ammo cans. Its easier to grab X quantity that 1, 2 or 3 handful of X caliber.
