How do you store your gun(s)?

I just received my PAL and Im interested in a .22 and learning on that before I move onto something bigger (if ever). A safe seems overkill for my needs, no?
 
Overkill? Depends on your personal situation.

Do you have curious children around the house? A stoner room-mate? Live in an area where you expect a break-in?

What do you mean by ‘a .22’; a cheap rifle, I'm assuming? The bare bones method of Storage for Non-Restricted firearms is likely to be something like in the corner of your bedroom with a trigger lock. The bare bones for Restricted is just how you Transport it to the range: in a locked box with a trigger lock (that way you don't even un-pack when you get home). The leaning in the corner is not especially suitable if you're concerned about some of the scenarios I listed earlier.
 
No children, no room mate, nice suburban neighborhood. Just looking to spend 3 or 4 hundred on a .22 rifle.

Ive looked around for safes and im basically buying a locker for anything priced between 3 to 8 hundred and i really cant justify spending anymore than that on a safe.
 
If you're set on just the .22 then the bare minimum, as mentioned, is a trigger lock. I'd throw it in a case on top of that just to keep it a bit hidden and protected. Next step up would be a small safe as mentioned by diabetickripple, $100 bucks and plenty of room for a couple of rifles and some other stuff. Nice to keep it all in one place under lock and key.
 
Trigger locks are all you need for non-restricted, and if you want store it in a rack like the picture shows from the RCMP website.

Non-restricted firearms
• Attach a secure locking device, such as a trigger lock or cable lock (or remove the bolt) so the firearms cannot be fired; or
trigger lock cable lock
• Lock the firearms in a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into.
