I think I may have just asked a simple but stupid question but how do you store a 50 Cal rifle like an HS-50?

I don't think they fit in gun cabinets..... so what do you do? Strip it down and store it? Leave it on a shelf in the garage with a cloth over it like an old Harley??

Someone enlighten me here.... I want to own one but don't really know how to even safely secure such a powerful...... toy.

I know it's non-restricted.... out in the open at home with a trigger lock???

A non-restricted firearm follows non-restricted rules...

I'd love to see you get an exception for animal or predator control.

"non-restricted firearm needed to control animal predators can temporarily be kept handy and unlocked:
-The firearm must be unloaded
-Ammunition must be kept separate"

:sniper:

Ahhh! Elephant infestation!

My PGW LRT-3 fits in my Stack-on Elite 29" barrel + 2.5" of muzzle brake folding stock in open locked position. Easy buy a Prairie Gun Works LRT-3
problem solved:D

There are three basic options for storage of non-restricted firearms. Unloaded, and: rendered inoperative by a locking device, or, removal of the bolt, or, locked up. Surely one of these would be applicable.

There ARE safes made that ARE big enough, I have several 50s and bigger guns as well and no problem.
Most 50s are easily broken down , in the case of the HS undoing 2 easily accessable bolts and you have a 2 part rifle that will easily fit in any safe.

I do like the coffee table idea but there are many safes out there that will work.

I have a Sentry Safe, it's fairly tall (~5') my HS50 just fit but I had to trim the lower wooden shelf to give me a little bit more room. It worked quite well, safe and secure.

Doesn't the bolt just have to be out of the action? I store mine in a plastic case with the bolt out but in the case with the gun.

Is that right?

If the bolt is out of the action and next to the gun then you will still need somekind of a lock rendering the firearm unusable. At least that's way I understand it.

I don't want to start anything but I think its stupid how its worded.

"•Attach a secure locking device, such as a trigger lock or cable lock (or remove the bolt) so the firearms cannot be fired"

When I read that I think if the bolt isn't in the action then its safe.

Thats what it makes me think.
