I'm looking at purchasing a brand new rifle in the box right from the factory and would like to keep it unfired and NIB. Should I actually store it in the box or should I put it in a gun sock and store it in my gun safe and store the box up in the rafters? Educated opinions are welcome.

Kindest regards,

Any guns enemy is humidity and moisture, keepeing the gun dry is what is the most important. Manufacturers apply protective coatings to their firearms before they package them for delivery, keeping them safe from corrosion. You can keep the gun in the box this is doable but it will take up alot of room in the safe, instead I would apply a coating like gun grease and wrap it up with a plastic film like saran wrap and slip the whole thing in a sock, place it in the safe like that. You can also go as far as separating the action from the stock if the stock is a quality oil finish job otherwise the grease will make a mess on the finish. I have an unfired Enfield that is already wrapped up like that from the factory and I will not be seeing it for a very long time if ever. Oh yea, do not throw out the box or anything that the gun came with, no matter how insignificant.

Doesn't matter, keep her in the box if you have enough room to store it without things bumping into it to damage the box.

Make sure to throw some moisture absorption material in though as if its wrapped up you won't be able to see it over time.

No way would I ever wrap a gun in plastic. It could sweat and get damp.
As you say, moisture is your enemy, but circulating air is your friend.
I would just wipe the metal with a cloth dampened in automatic transmission oil and set it in the safe. Maybe wipe it down again in a year or so.

"...Is automatic transmission oil really the best thing..." No.
There aren't any BNIB rifles fresh from the factory that are collectable. However, leave it in the unopened box and put it in your safe.

You would not leave it in a box or whatever. Coat the rifle with a heavy grease and check it every 6 months recoat as required.

Agree. I have quite a few new unfired some for 40 years and they are as I bought them.
Take the box and all misc paper work wrap it in brown paper to protect it from dust and store out of sunlight in a heated location.
Heavily oil the gun internally, and wipe all of the exposed metal surfaces with a gun grease made for long term storage. The stuff I have is in a yellow tube Hoppes?? Put it in a silicon gun stock and store barrel down so no oil runs into the stock. Put in gun safe, with moisure control capability, , if not add charcoal in a pan at the bottom, light etc.
Check it every six-8 months. That works for me.No plastic wrapped on any of mine.

Funny that was said 75-100 years ago also when they sold some model 12's for 59.99 which are worth over 5000 today as just one example.
There are guns being made today that will prove to be very collectable we just have to be smart enough to determine which ones.
