So I have a couple thousand rounds of ammo stored in factory boxes...I have several steel mil.spec ammo bins...

just wondering if anyone actually just throws there ammo in the bins loose to save space/storage? is this ok to do? I know it sounds dumb, but I'm just wondering if maybe cardboard storage for ammo is better cause it can breath more? Do ammo bins hold loose ammo ok without concerns for humidity etc?

The more I think about it, the more I don't think it matters, but I also know the original mil. ammo probably only sat a few months in the steel bins so exposure was a moot point.

Any opinions? So far the ammo bins sound better for storage as far as space savings go...

Cabelas used to sell the metal ammo boxes filled to the brim with loose ammo as a "special" for a couple years (about 9 years ago).

I don't think it matters... I've personally got all my ammo stored in a metal ammo crate although not loose (since I have different brands in there).

yeah the cardboard boxes don't fit well in the bins...

Here's my small box. Has ammo, gun cleaning kit, misc tools, knife, etc. I created it so I could just grab a single box plus my gun if I wanted to go blast a few rounds.

You got all your stuff in that box? Damn, I usually need a sherpa to lug all the crap I take.

Well generally I can shoot off my back porch, but yeah that one there is my rimfire kit for when I head out to the gravel pit. Two bricks of ammo, gun cleaning kit, tools for adjusting scope, knife, extra keys for my gun lock, roll of tape (for putting up targets), bipod, etc. :D

Not sure what else I would need in it! :D

i dump all my .22 into a smaller ammo box. i dump shotshells into a .50 cal box. once i get settles on a 7mm load, i'll have almost 300 rounds to load up, and i'll dump all those in a .50 cal box as well.

1 I keep all my .22 from each manufacturer loose in the can, provided that the lot numbers are the same.

2 What ever you put in the can will have the humidity level of the particular day that you seal the can. Some military items can not be sealed up if the humidity is above a certain level.

3 FALSE Military ammunition for small arms can be many years old before use. In the current world climate this is less and less likely as we try to use the old before the new.

As a side note, sometime in the 90's I remember hearing of a young lad that tripped over a WWII ammo can on the beach in Jamaica. The can was completely sand/water blasted on it's exterior yet contained pristine 12.7mm machine gun ammo in links. So 60 years after the war you could have had brand new 50 cal.

I just purchased a couple of surplus ammo boxes for 7.62. I noticed the covers have rubber gaskets that make them airtight. Will storing ammo in them contradict CFO regulations on ammo storage?

Thanks.

The regs refer to the "accessibility" of the firearm to the ammunition. Not the way ammo must be stored.

(c) it is not readily accessible to ammunition, unless the ammunition is stored, together with or separately from the firearm, in

(i) a container or receptacle that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into, or

(ii) a vault, safe or room that has been specifically constructed or modified for the secure storage of restricted firearms and that is kept securely locked.

Silica gel packs from shoe boxes work great, toss a few inside. Go to a shoe store, they have plenty. If you have Drierite, even better.

I keep a padlock on each of my 3 mil ammo cans. just need to find the right sized lock.

Never store in a basement, always ground floor or second, if containers are the crappy tire type or open to air.

I've stored ammo loose in a 25mm ammo can for over 5 years without problems. I've also seen ammo crates opened that contained loose ammo stored for god only knows how long.

Not a big deal imo.
