So, because I'm sick and quarantined to my room I'm taking time to get read up on my shiny new Daniel Defense M4 V5.

I've been looking around for possible transport case options and I've seen a few designed to carry the upper and lower separately to reduce the case length from the stereotypical "rifle case" profile that we all know by heart.

However, over an hour of internet searching hasn't turned up any conclusive information on storing the upper and lower separately.

Other than the increased probability of dust and debris getting into the internals, or possible increased exposure to surface moisture, is there anything wrong with storing the upper separately from the lower?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I cannot find any mention of it.

Thanks.

The upper is uncontrolled do whatever you want with it. Its the lower or portion with the serial number that is of concern. Same deal for handguns

I was thinking more along the lines of mechanically wrong, rather than legally wrong.

Things such as parts getting rusted more easily than normal.

Hmmm.
You have to open 2 zippers instead of one...........

and push the 2 Pivot Pins in to attach the upper.

Wow, you better hold off on that case. Too much work.

i am looking for a case that will hold both upper and lower but in their broken down form. i think i figured it would need to be 19-20" long and 12-14" tall. is there something like this in hard shell case?

Pelican may have something for you http://www.casesbypelican.com/pelican-cases-sizes.htm
The 1510 model has Inside Dims.: 20.25"L x 11.38"W x 7.5"H
Might work.

Boyt also makes comparable hardcases

It really seems to skip from handgun case to rifle case. Personally I'd love something about 28" long, 12" wide, and 4" tall. That would probably give me room for the separated AR and a handful of mags. Though from the sounds of it I'd likely have to have such a thing custom made for hundreds of dollars.
The Pelican 1650 might work, but it's more along the lines of portable locker rather than something I can actually carry.

I'll have to start window shopping things that can be made to work. Maybe tool boxes or instrument cases.
