I was out shooting my 597 TVP for the second time and I could not get through a 10 rd. clip without a jam. The gun would fail to eject the spent round and the bolt would jam on the empty shell.

This is really discouraging! The first time I shot, I had no issues at all.

Tomorrow I am going to break er down and use some "dry lube" on the bolt rods and loosen them. If that doesnt fixz it, I will upgrade to a VQ extractor and hammer. But I dont want to upgrade if the problem wont be fixed.

I love my remington, but its sad that they havent fixed it after many years of the same old. I thought with this new model I might be ok... but nope.

I am just using federal value pack cheapies (36 gr. hp). I will try and change ammos before doing the upgrades. I just think it will be a pain to send it back to remington for something that can be upgraded for less than $50.

I know there is alot of advice on this already. But anything is helpful (I dont mind repeats)!

Thanks very much!

Have a close look at the extractor,is it closing all the way?
And did you clean it before you shot it the first time?

Also the best way to break in a new rimfire is using ammo with lots of pop.
My Henry wouldn't cycle sub-sonics at first, about 50 mags in it now cycles them fine.

I am going to take the extractor out today and clean everything up. I didnt clean it before I shot the first time... or second time. All together, the gun has seen less than 400 shells EVER!

When you take it apart, make sure you leave the sliding rods almost loose. Just turn in the screws until contact. If they are too tight they may bend a little, and that is no good.
I have trouble with the ctgs sticking in the magazine. I took them apart and tried smoothing the contact areas. Helped a bit.

Finger tight on those rods and very little oil.

It's definitely the rods... my 597 did EXACTLY what you are describing... I knew it needed to be stripped and put back together on purchase. The rods were super tight causing the bind (they flex under pressure) so I re-installed them @ 5"/lbs of torque (inch, not foot pounds). Runs perfectly now.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have cleaned every piece of the rifle and tightned the rods to finger tight. I will try shooting tomorrow again hopefully and see how it goes.

I welcome any other comments or replies!

So I went shooting lastnight. The stovepiping was no better. I will try and pick up some CCI mini mags and see how that goes. If that doesnt fix it, I will have to contact remington.

When you close the bolt slowly (riding it) does it stop before closing fully?
Does it feel like the bolt is binding?

You say you tightened the rods hand tight... did you remove them first then re-insert them or did you just back off the locking set screws then re-tighten them (I would want to have removed the rods and re-insert them.)

I had the same problem. I replaced the extractor with a "Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor for the Rem. 597" that I ordered from Rimfire Sports. That fixed the problem for me. I'm not sure which contributing dealers of CGN carry them. I also don't over tighten the guide rods.

I have a stock remington 597 extractor that I pulled out of my gun and replaced with a volquartsen. It was working fine, I just felt like upgrading it because I read so many stories about them failing after several hundred rounds (if not sooner). If you want it PM your address and I'll ship it to you (no charge).

Alright .. bear with me... I will repy to a few posts.

I tried the CCI blazers today. They were terrible. No accuracy and tons of jams. Same with the american eagle.

The Remington Vipers worked like a charm. I went through 5 full clips without a single problem. I was SOOO HAPPY!! I will get a bigger case of those and see what happens.

"G37" If I close the bolt slowly, it doesnt close all the way. I think it gets stuck on the extractor. but at any normal speed, it closes all the time. When I say I loosend the bolt rods, I mean I took them right out. I tightened them after cleaning.

"Super 7" Thanks for the offer. I think I will upgrade to the VQ as well if the vipers dont work. I have plans to do the hammer and the extractor. I just need the funds.

Canada_man: You definitely have a binding problem. I wonder if a rod is bent?
I just held my bolt at the point where the extractor was just touching the barrel and let go... the bolt slammed closed with authority.

36gr is not strong enough for some seme semi auto action. lub the action and try some 40gr high velocity ammo like winchester dyna point. I am quite sure your gun is fine but they need heavlier ammo to cycle the action.

My 597 now has 4000 rounds through it, and it works great, if I use Winchester Dynapoints.

If I use the federal bulk pack (which I prefer as they are cleaner for my revolver) the 597 will not get more than 2 shots off in a row. FTE, FTF, FTL. It just sucks.

Switch back to Dynapoints, and it's like night and day. I also am working on a buddies 597 for him, as he was having all kinds of problems. After smoothening out the guide rods with very fine sandpaper, hand tightening them, and switching to dynapoints, it works great.

Good luck, they are all a little different, all you can do it try a variety of things, but I have yet to change my extractor or hammer.

Could someone please define "stovepiping" for a noob? I have heard it mentioned alot. I gather it is "failure to eject" or is it more than that?

Thanks.

A newly fired round would still have smoke coming from the empty casing sticking out of the reciever. Hence the term stove pipe.
