Stowing a Take-Down

What's your preferred method for transporting a single-shot takedown? And for hiking with one?

It may depends on how long with the barrel, I used to bring with my lovely NFE 20 gauge with me in the wood,striped on the side of the back pack but still quite a long stick. but when hiking, I think a sling will work better as no time to get it undone from the back pack.
