From the book The Black Rifle; the subtle curve of the standard 30 round magazine is because of the eventual curve created by stacking 30 rounds of 5.56mm on top of each other and still get them to feed reliably.
Another interesting note is that the reason the curve is the way it is (ie at the bottom of the mag vice a consistent curve like the AK) is because the AR was designed originally with only a 20 round magazine in mind, hence the straight mag well. Keeping the top of the magazine straight and then having it steadily curve out from the bottom of the magazine well was a way to bypass the design features of the rifles receiver and still effectively get a 20 round + magazine to work reliably in it.
