Seen some pictures of straight pull lee rifles. not sure if they are lee-enfields. The United States used them for naval rifles but wasn't to happy with them. did they get surplussed out? Does anyone have any and how do you find them?

Model 1895 Lee. Only relation to Lee Enfield is the fella that did the design work.
Made by Winchester, many reliability issues.
Winchester made some sporting rifles but hunters were not impressed with performance of small fast moving projectile.
Approx. 18000 military and 1500 sporting rifles produced.
In all my years bring involved with guns I never seen one.

They weren't Lee Enfields. James Paris Lee designed a straight pull clip loading rifle, I believe, around the turn of the last century. The U.S. Navy bought a bunch of them, but they proved to be too awkward, and were later supplanted by better designs. As far as I know, they are highly collectable, and thus very scarce. If you look at some of the american gun auction sites and/or do a web search, you'll see what the values and availiblity are. Lots of luck!

I don't know much about the incident with the blown Lee-Navy. Possibly someone else can fill in the blanks. The man was an employee of SARCO and was firing one of their guns. There was some suggestion that his loads were excessive, that they gave indications of trouble but that he continued to shoot them anyway. I don't know any details fo that. Anyway, the firing pin came out of the bolt and struck him in the forehead, possibly from a blown primer. Some Lees have a cover plate across the back of the bolt: apparently his didn't. My sporter doesn't either, which makes me doubly cautious. I guess I'll shoot it some more when I get the stock repaired.
