We blocked off the hole in the barrel of a Chinese SKS with a tiny Allen head screw. Did that a few years ago. Every once in a while I take it out and blast off some surplus. I am always surprised at how well it shoots. Very pleasant to shoot and accurate. Cranked off 25 rounds yesterday.

I figured that would trigger a "why". I can only offer the standard answer - because I could. The stock is ratty, but the action looks to be new, plus I have other SKS's to use. I strolled over to the CO-OP farm store next to my shop and found a screw that fit perfectly, tightened it as much as I dared, and presto! Straight pull SKS.

Unless the free floating firing pin gets stuck in the extended position, then it'll be "and presto! fully automatic SKS."

Be nice to recover the brass if you handload lol.

Tried it with the 10 lb Yugo rifles with the big ol grenade launcher. They have the valve and all. It was pretty cool, although it still shot awful SKS groups even with the cutoff making it a bolt action.

Didn't destroy brass and launch it into the next postal code, which is something I guess.

I did that years ago with one, for testing purpose. Accuracy definitely improved.

Wasn't many options for a manual action 762x39 back then.

Wouldn't the worst case scenario be it fires a single round when you close the action?
I think that would be correct. No gas to blow the action back. I don't charge the rifle until in a safe direction. I could also take a look at the front of the bolt before charging. Can't say that I do that though.

There has to be an after market mod for a spring return on the firing pin? The sks has a huge aftermarket so I would be surprised if the stuck free floating firing pin issue hasn't been addressed by someone.

Clean the firing pin channel from cosmoline, then just check that it rattles loose in the bolt every time you clean the rifle. Stuck pins and slam fire caused by it is usually a maintenance issue. But there's an aftermarket pin with a spring made by Murray, if one wants to upgrade.

This is why the civilization you live in exists.

Because someone said : "Because I wanted to see if I can".

Never disparage that spirit.

To increase accuracy and perhaps make cleaning easier I'm guessing.
How would that increase accuracy? The round is long gone before the recoil cycle occurs.

You could smack yourself in the head with a brick .... and yet you don't. 🤷‍♂️

How accurate exactly? This could serve a purpose if it turns 6 moa rifles into 2 moa rifles.
It would make ZERO difference to the accuracy.
