strange chrony results... 10mm

I was out today working up a 10 auto load and got some strange numbers on the display.First i tried out some federal 180gr factory ammo,to try and get a bit of a baseline to check my loads against,the results read:
170.4
170.5
168.4
170.1
172.0 and then 1102fps(which seemed correct),then a few more 170.3,171.2,and so on ,then another about 1100 fps.
As soon as i started using the handloads all the numbers seemed correct,the display read in fps for every shot and went up as my loads increased.The remington ammo had a copper jacket,while my loads were with the winchester sthp's,but the straight lead i shot right after in the 40S&w all measured just fine also.Surely the remington ammo is moving faster then 170 fps,but i havent seen this on my chrony display before.It was only -1 today with heavy snowfall.Has anyone seen this before.I dont have my manual for the chrony anymore,but i wasnt sure what those numbers meant.Thanks :confused:
 
I put new batteries in it when i left this morning,then after i was finished shooting the handloads tried the factory ammo again with the same kind of results.I thought i had a special chrony that was telling me the power factor;)
 
Either the snow or the lighting conditions were screwing it up... I couldn't get mine to register anything coherent one day with clouds and light rain, next day it worked perfectly.
 
I have an F1 chrony that does the same thing but only when it's cloudy or too cold. I would bring it inside for a bit to warm up then it would work fine, but only for a few minutes. I would guess that if it isn't your battery as ckc123 suggested then it's probably too cold.
 
Thanks for the ideas,i will try it on another day,maybe the copper colored jackets reflected differently then the lead and silver ones and the light conditions had something to do with it.
 
i made stand to hold a pc of cloudy plastic or cardboard over the top for those days when conditions are just not right higher than the normal stands
app 14 inch up never get off readings any more unless it is muzzle blast
 
you can also take a black permanent marker to the bullets (this was the only way I could get my old one to work with anything larger then a .22).


Then again.. just get a CED chrony, and you never have to worry about it not reading.. ;)
 
Thanks for the suggestions,after reading some testimonials on that ced chrony,that looks like the way to go.Has anyone on CGN tried one?I had never heard of it before,but it looks good.
 
where are you located??? I have one and I love it.. it reads all the time, plus I got the infrared as well (for an indoor range, where I turn off all the lights (florescent bulbs can cause problems with chrony's in general)

that plus the nice thing with CED is just the sensors are on the end.. all the electronics are on the remote (unlike the shooters which does have some in the box, even with the remote display)
 
Iam located in 100 mile house.Yes the chrony display is in the box that the projectile passes over,gotta be careful.Is the ced fairly trouble free?
