Strange Follower on Enfield Mag - Advice?

I purchased a Lee Enfield No.4 Mk1 which came with this 5-round Mag:

enfield_5rnd_mag.jpg

The mag wasn't feeding at all initially (never mentioned in the EE sale description but that's another story :( ... ), I adjusted the lips and got it working - except that the mag won't retain (or feed) the last round ... in other words, it's fine for 4 rounds but that 5th round moves to the center and pops right out. I assume this is due to the follower which is unlike the follower in all my other Enfield mags (it doesn't 'push' the round to one side).

My questions:

1) is that a legitimate mag/follower for .303 Brit rounds or has it been 'adapted' from some other purpose... what's the story with this mag?

2) is there any way to get this working with that follower (that would cost less than a new mag...)

Thanks guys.

That magazine is adapted for single shot .22! That's the Long Branch magazine setup for the CNo7 .22 target rifle.

Notice the carved out slot at the rear of mag for the fired .22 casings to fall through into the magazine well itself.

Maybe time for a refund? ;)

I wouldn't neccesarily apply for a refund...the 22 mags are normally worth considerably more than a regular #4 mag.
The platform is only for feeding the 22 in by hand, and then allowing the spent case to fall in to the mag housing. The fact that you got it to work at all is amazing. The lips on a 22 are indeed different angles from a regular #4 mag.

I have seen just that platform sell for $90 on ebay.

Unbelievable!

This mag came with a sporterized No4 - my first deal via the EE and my first Lee Enfield (i.e. I was a complete newbie). The purchase turned out to be material fit for one of the recent "EE gone bad" threads. In part because I was an EE virgin with no established credentials, but also because I couldn't decide if the seller was devious or just ignorant, I decided not to leave negative feedback and chalked it up to being an (expensive & frustrating) learning experience... so at least I'm still getting my money's worth on the education count!

I did get this to feed .303 rounds and and if I recall correctly it didn't seem like I had to bend the front lips all that much (I bent them inwards - closer to each other). I don't think I touched the rear lips. Now that I understand what the platform/follower is doing, I assume the feed lips don't have any roll in actually feeding the .22 round (i.e. it's the follower/platform that directs the round into the chamber).

I'll go measure the lips now (distance between edges) and would be interested to know what the correct specs are for the normal .22 conversion magazine (i.e. so I can report how much I've bent them).

I'm encouraged by the possibility that I may be able to leverage this 'mistake' into correcting some of the issues related to this purchase - maybe I can use it to fund a set of sights (seller neglected to mention they were missing from the gun!) as well as a working .303 magazine.

Thanks for the information, the pics & your time guys.

Could you post some pics of the rifle, showing the missing sights? We can advise when we see it...

I see you are in Ottawa as well, I have a fair number of sights and as long as what you need is not the last one I have I can probably help you out. The guys here will probably know better which it should be for what you have.
