I have a Sako TRG 42 338 Lapua with a NightForce 5.5-22x50 scope, which I shot with the muzzle brake removed, so recoil is heavy but very managable. Today I setup at 400 yards and took my first cold bore shot, and to my amazement the shot hit 8 inches high! This never happens, I've got this rifle dialed and I shot it a few times a week. The rifle is zeroed at 400 yards, so lots of shots have been taken at this range. So I dialed the MOA down 1 and took a few more shots, and now its hitting low of the POA. So I dial up 1/2 MOA and its hitting good again. I shot a few groups and decided to dial up another 1/4". The next shot went 8" high!! So I dialed back 1/4 and its back down 8". Dialed up 1/2 and its way up there again. Does this mean my scope is pooched, and its time to send it back to NightForce for some surgery? This is very disappointing, I figured this scope would hold up to the heavy recoil...has anyone else had this type of issue with a high end scope. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks guys.

Is this scope new to you? I'm only asking because it sounds as though each click of elevation is not giving you what you expect, so perhaps the scope has something other than the typical 1/4-inch clicks adjustments. If I read your post correctly, you were shooting about 2MOA high, you dialed down 1MOA, but wound up getting more than 2MOA correction.

My apologies if you are sure your adjustments were correct. I don't have a NF scope or do much shooting beyond 300 yards...just throwing out a suggestion.

The scope is new to me, and adjustment is in 1/4 click MOA. This is a strange issue, and I need to shoot it again to verify it is the scope. I highly suspect it is, since the action screws, rings and base are all solid. The scope has approx 1,500 300 WinMag and 500 338 Lapua rounds under its belt. According to NightForce propoganda this scope should handle 50,000 rounds from a 50BMG!!

That is a weird problem. Frequently when scopes give up the ghost they aren't consistent in adjustments. Before sending it back in place a collimeter on to your rifle and play with the adjustments. If the scope is out you will see it on the collimeter when you make adjustment (a sudden jump of minor corrections with a larger one). Hope this helps.

Nightforce does not recommend the use of rings with inserts as NF scopes are very heavy and many problems are associated with rings not designed for heavy scopes. This, from NF technician.

Adjusting the scope

IT MAY BE THAT YOU ARE NOT FAMILAR WITH THE SCOPE ADJUSTMENTS.
If one click = 1/4" at 100yds that's 1" at 400 yds. When you say you are dialing in a 1/4" what are you doing, that would be one click but only for 100 yds. One other point the first shot from a nice clean barrel usually goes either high or low depending on your rifle. I would not be too concerned about the first 2 or 3 shots with a target rifle until the barrel is fouled.
