I know some guns are happier with different ammo... thats fine. I bought all different kinds when I first got my Savage 93 .17 but today I got a deal I couldnt refuse on some winchester stuff. Its new, its good (and expensive if you dont get a sweet deal on it). But my gun is having a really terrible time shooting it. The firing pin hits the rim of the cartridge and dents it, but the round doesnt fire. If I put the round back in and try again, it will usually fire, only had one that wouldnt.

My gun doesnt like CCI... it jams up when its being loaded. But it fires every time. No problem... I think it has to do with the polymer tip. But this winchester stuff is just strange. Its like the rim of the cartridge is too stiff or too hard or something. Anyone have any thoughts on this. Anything I should look at? This only happens with winchester 17grain... nothing else.

Thats interesting hometownhero... I got a split case as well. I had just assumed winchester would be good ammo. But now I know to stick to hornday and federal. They both shoot excellent in this gun.

As for clean it is, its only been fired 200 or so times since new... its being cleaned tonight for the first time.

Ill check it... but it definitely responds differently to the gun. Fired 100 rounds of federal in the morning and not ONE FTF or jam or any issue at all. Then went to fire some of the winchester and about one in 3 would FTF and need to be reloaded and fired again. One I tried 3 times and it wouldnt go off... so I gave up on it and disposed of it. If they are made in the same factory, they arent made the same way or with the same materials thats for sure.

Thanks for the link 22lrguy... ill be getting one of those right away.

That sounds about right for the winchester hmr ammo. That said I dont buy any winchester ammo anymore.

i have a marlin 17 hmr.it loves the winchester 17 grain v-max stuff.does not like to chamberor group the 20 grain stuff.i have never had a ftf/ftc in the winchester 17 grain stuff.no split cases either.just a bad batch of ammo.

~ Clean the bolt face, be sure to get the corners.
~ With the bolt closed, stick the blade of a feeler gauge between the rear of the bolt handle and the receiver.
~ Fire the rifle and compare the results.

I had problems with Winchester 17 and 20 grain laods also... occasional FTF and split cases... after testing a dozen loads, I pretty much stick with Hornady 20 grain XTP's... they were the most consistent and accurate out of our Savage 93's.

Ive had nothing but great success with Hornady and federal 17grain. Its stocked in our local CT so I can get my hands on it and it seems to be the stuff most places sell in bulk. So thats probably what ill go with. Good to know my problems are likely due to the ammo rather than my gun. I love this thing and would hate to be without it while its getting repaired. I think I shot about 500 rounds over the long weekend. Would have shot more but I bought every round in every store in town.

Its a winchester/savage combo that is bad. There are many threads about that combo on here stating the same.

same problem

I have the same Savage .17 HMR, and the same problem with both Winchester and Federal ammo. Dents the casing, but no bang.

I only shoot Hornady and CCI, and have not had one miss since.
I find the Hornady actually fits in the mag better than the CCI also.

Tried win. 20gr in my t-bolt this weekend cuz its all I could get ahold of. Cycled fine but grouped like crap, going to stick with the hornady's. Sold my savage to a buddy who has great luck with the winchesters(so far) as he probably doesn't even have a box through it yet but groups the 20gr. very well.

I have the Savage 93 17HMR aswell and have had the same problem with Winchester Ammo in it. Probably 15/50 of the Super X FTF (fired after 2nd try). Hornady 17 grain never fail and 5 shot sub moa at 100 yards. I don't plan to shot anything else in it.
