I just had a look at a friend's 1956 Winchester Model 94 and it has the forward sling swivel mounted into the left hand side of forward part of the wooden fore-end just behind the barrel ring.

I've never seen anything like it before.

Have you?

Sorry for the poor photo. My battery was running down, but you can get the idea.

Possibly military. Maybe a 50's vintage aftermarket sling swivel. Or jury rigged by a previous owner who had the swivel and no money to buy a new one.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the National Guard or Prison guard 94s had side slings but I thought they were attached to the barrel band??

If it's just screwed into the wood I say Bubba did it!

It cannot be too strongly mounted as the wood is very thin at that point, unless the bolt goes thru the mag tube to the opposite side. Most slings by this year were mounted to the mag tube by various means.

Thanks. I'll look for a mag tube mount. I have one on another '94 I'm not likely to hunt with any more anyway.

Yup that's what it looks like to me.
I have a few of those old vintage swivels kicking around the spare parts box.
