Was at range yesterday and a fellow sighting his 760 Rem in 3006 left me his cases. Most were standard Rem commercial cases. Certainly have a use for those. A couple others were "strange" to me. The first thing I noticed they have an indented ring about 10 mm up from the base all the way around the case. This was before firing! It was not quite as pronounced on a couple cases after firing but was certainly still there.
Cases are magnetic so I assume steel coated with nickel or chrome? Headstamped MFS and 3006 Spring. As well as 3 other symbols/letters I didn't recognize.
Primer is bronze coloured with red sealer. Looks larger than LR so I assume Berdan. Couldn't see into the case with the light I had.

Couple questions- Is this stuff corrosive -The shooter had no idea what I was talking about- and what is the purpose of the "dent"

I got some MFS, this stuff was brass, I shot 5 rds in the gun and had a puff of smoke around the bolt (mauser 98 action) scared the crap out of me, flattened primers and a mark from the case flowing into the ejector groove on the bolt. The 30/06 normally has a ring around it at the web, not a headspace thing just something that the 30/06 does, this did not, looks as though the web was blown out flat too.

Needless to say it was a pressure problem, grey box Winchester shoots fine.

I will never buy MFS again, scary stuff.

The 'groove' around the case head on the Barnaul or MFS steel case ammo is an 'expansion ring'.

The theory of it is that in an overpressure or excessive headspace situation, it expands to the chamber diameter and prevents a case head separation (or so the interweb told me.....). Steel doesn't expand like brass does.

Do I get a cookie?

One other comment about the guy at the range yesterday. His 760 would almost keep the Rem ammo touching at 50yds (rifle was scoped) The MFS "stuff" was all over the paper. Bullets appeared to be FMJ.

Don't wanna steal your thread, but it seems it's been answered.

Anyone know the story with these 06' rounds?. I got a handful of them with a Garand I picked up.
