Stripped grip screw

I replaced the grip on my carbine the other day with a magpul moe k2 and managed, like a moron, to put the screw in a little off center, which has stripped the first 1/4" of threads.

I know I need a 1/4"-28 tap to fix this, but my question is whether I should take my rifle to a gunsmith and have him do it, or is this a simple enough fix that a moron like me could buy a tap and do it myself?

If the hole goes thru you can just run the starter tap thru and be fine. Use a good lubricant. If the threaded hole is blind you’ll need a tap set. If you bottom the tap out and break it you’ll have a bunch of new problems. Ask members from your local gun clubs. There’ll be someone with tools and experience to help.

Depending on the platform of said carbine and space available (of a thru-hole), I would even consider chasing the thread from the other side. Try with the grip screw first and depending on how badly stripped that 1/4" section is, you may or may not need a tap.

Is there any way you can get to the other side of the hole? I’d just chase the threads with the correct tap from the good side if possible.
