Hi all,

Wondering if i could get suggestions before i bring my rifle to a gunsmith.

Was going to take off a 2 pc leupold STD mounts find that the allen screw that bolts the base to the reciever was stripped only the one screw.

Any suggestions how to take it off ? allen key screw completely stripped out.

Probably not completely correct but I have been able to get enough grab by tapping in a tight fitting Torx tip into an Allen socket. Gotta hope whoever installed it knew the difference between red and blue loctite!

Use a drill, either a hand drill or drill press (preferred) to remove the head of the screw.

The scope base will come off and you will be left with enough protruding threaded stem to be able to grab it with a pair of pliers or a small vice grip plier.

If the screw hasn't been epoxied into place, it should turn out very easily. Might even be able to remove it with your fingertips if the threads haven't deformed to much.

If epoxy has been used to secure the screw threads, you will have to apply enough heat to melt the epoxy.

The best way to do this is to hold a 1/4 in or slightly smaller diameter rod against the top of the protruding stud and heat it with a butane/propane bottle type hand torch. The should be heated to cherry red. The heat will be transferred to the stud and the epoxy should soften enough to allow it to be turned out with the pliers.

Good suggestions. Before doing anything else, confirm that it is the screw head that is stripped out and not the allen key. Perhaps try a fresh good quality allen key just to be sure.

yes .. do this ^^^ first.

Then try an easy out before you start drilling anything.

How on earth do you use an easyout without drilling anything????

if the cap head is just stripped there is already a hole there :)

You can actually get "tight tolerance" extractors that may work or something like: https://www.mcmaster.com/easy-out-extractors/tight-clearance-extractors-6/

I would imagine if one looked hard enough an extractor type could be found for the specific size of cap head screw the OP has. Like these:

KBC probably carries all that stuff too.

those WEDGE-PRUF EXTRACTOR things seem to be ideal for a cap head screw.

Drive a no. 2 Robertson bit into the screw. Heat the screw and base with a heat gun first; in case of loc tite. Drive the bit in and turn the screw out. Ignore all other instructions.
