Hello All,

I was getting excited with a new red dot sight and wanted to see how it would look on my .22 Ruger rifle. I was able to loosen the rear screws on my bushnell 2-7x scope (with some alan key star shape variant tool?)- buuut as I tried to loosen the front I cheesed them pretty bad. Now it looks like a spastic gave my front rail screws 10 seconds of power drill to the face.

1.) How do I get the stripped screw out?
2.) Will bushnell replace my screws? Can I easily replace them?

Thanks!

The bit you are describing is a Torx bit, awesome fasteners as they are hard to strip, unless you force them with the wrong size. You have a few options. Depending on how much meat there is on the screw head you can cut a slot in it with a dremel or hacksaw and use a flat tip screw driver to get them out or use a commercially available stripped screw remover such as an Easyout. Crappy tire has many such tools for sale. once you get them out any screw of the right thread pitch and diameter will work, allen head would be best if you do not want to track down torx head screws.

Thank you very much. I had the gun shop attach the scope and I hadn't removed it for 2+ years. I used the proper tool but maybe I didn't seat it deep enough? Thanks for the info, I appreciate the help.

Is there a security pin in the center, if so then you need a torx driver with a hole in it. They are called security bits. Another option would be to use a dab of light duty epoxy and "weld" the tool in place to get each screw out. I would only bother with this if you are likely to damage anything by getting in there with a cutting tool. Where do you live, perhaps you are close to someone tool savvy who can help you out.

If you use the correct bit, and use it properly, the torx heads are far superior to allen heads. I have only ever had an issue with one one torx head, and that was because a defective torx bit actually broke as I was loosening a ring screw. If you can't remove the torx screw any other way, you can carefully drill the head off, and remove the top half of the ring, and the scope, and there will be a stub of the screw protruding that is usually quite easy to remove, unless the person that installed it did something silly like putting loctite, on the threads of a ring screw..
