Hi guys,

I managed to strip the thread in one of the brackets that hold the stock to my rifle.

I'm looking for some advice on how to repair it. I was planning to use one a helicoil type insert (it's an M5 thread), but since the whole bracket is only about 1/8" thick I'm wondering if that will hold?

Or should I just skip the DIY route and take it to the gunsmith?

Thanks!

Here's a pic - I borrowed one from the internet, but I'll try to get a better one in the evening. The stripped bracket is circled.

Just re-thread it with a tap. Likely have to be one size bigger. If you are in the least bit concerned with doing it yourself, go to a smithy. Easily fixed, but shop time isn't cheap.

You can't just run a bigger tap through and fix a hole... it needs to be drilled out to the next tap drill size, then tapped. You could also look into Heli-coils which are extremely tough, but sometimes don't work well in through-holes.
