Now correct me if im wrong but I can use the same stripper clips for M98, M96, US 1903 & 1917, & FN49? Been out of milsurps for long time, pretty sure ive done it in the past but dont have left to check with.

I have never owned a 1903, P1917, or an FN49 but I know the M98 and M96 can use the same stripper clips.

There are some South american mausers that have the wide stripper clip guides so the standard ones we commonly run into don't fit snug. I, however, cannot remember which ones theses are.

Most 98's use the same style stripper clips (8mm, 7mm, 30-06, .308, 7.65Argy, etc) The M96 should be the same as well. The FN49s should be the same (My 8mm sure does, but make sure you "rock" the stripper clip in, it's not straight in like a Mauser. Same goes for the Hakim, they "rock" in.)...

I'm pretty sure the 03 Springfield and perhaps the Model 17 use slightly different 30-06 strippers, I know I have a bag of 30-06 strippers that are supposed to be for the 1903 Springfield and they DO NOT work in any of my other Mausers, Fns, etc... I've have, and have owned in the past about 6 different Model 17s, but all of them have been sporterized and had the charger bridge filed out... :( Plus, I've never owned a 1903 Springfield...

Others will chime in I'm sure who might know better than I...

Mauser Chargers (stripper-clips) were ACTION-SPECIFIC. All 98s used one type, 95s used another, there was an earlier one for the 91. The Swedish 96 uses its own clip, which also can work with the AG42/42B rifles.

Clips for .303 are 4 types, Marks I, II, III and IV. They all work the same, interchange from 1902 onward.

The 7.62NATO has its own clip and interchanges among all firearms built around that cartridge: G3, M-14/15, FAL, BM-59 et cetera.

G/K-43 used the 98 Mauser clip.

US Model of 1903 and the US M-1917 used the same clip.

NOW it gets confusing: P-'13 has its own specific clip, P-'14 uses the .303 clip and P-'17 uses the American clip!

There WAS a special 10-round clip for the SAFN but I don't think any were released.

Not much help, I know, but it is a huge subject in its own right.

Smellie has got it correct! I certainly don't have the knowledge to spell out the permutations like he summarized, but just because a 308, 30-06, 8x57, 7x57 can all be loaded onto a particular charger, it does not mean it will work in the particular rifle. Chargers have 3 side bumps, two bumps and a single bump, all of which position the lower end differently in relation to the magazine. Differing widths and thicknesses. I have got a bit of a collection building up from ebay purchases of multiple different kinds of the wrong ones!

not certain on the 8mms, but I have personally used 30-06 strippers for arisaka 44 and 99s, as well as M41 swedish mauser, likewise I have used swedish strippers for the arisakas and 30-06. 308 has the same case head as 30-06 so assuming the FN49 was one of the 308 versions yes it would work for those as well. the springfield and 1917 used the same strippers so all of the above would work on the 1917.

little tidbit, none of the above will work on 7.5 french. mosin and enfield strippers are not interchangeable.

I have a Brazilian 1954/.30-06. It will not take a standard 98 clip. It will however take 1903 Springfield clips, and M96 mauser clips.
Many south american Mausers , though 98 actions, would have the charger guide cut for use of the clips from previous rifles they had in service.
Hence the brazilian taking the older style clip, iirc, the 93/95-(96 too???) style which the americans copied the pattern off of (both rifle and clip) and had to pay royalties for copyright infringement over.
