I'd like to give my old remington 760 a make over because the varnish is mostly gone from the stock.

The original owner (back in the 50's) did some inletting on it and I'm not sure if stripper would attack the glue and lift it.. I have no idea what glue he used.

I'll worry about finishing it later, for now I just want to get the old junk off.

He was a violin maker if that would give any hints as to what the glue might be. I'm pretty inexperienced with wood so I'm out of my element here.

Inletting? Inlay or glass bedding?

If you are worried about either, tape around the areas you wish to avoid with the stripper, and you can finish those off with sandpaper. Use a block behind the sandpaper to avoid putting finger grooves in it. A heavy rubber sanding block is only a couple bucks and you should have one in your tool kit anyways, eh.

It's some wood inlays in the stock. Sorry, tired after a 12 hour night shift!

Masking and sanding sounds like it would work. Another issue I'm going to have is the wood on the pump and the wood on the butt seem to be finished differently so matching stains might prove difficult.

I'll post some pics in the next few days when I'm off to show what I'm up against.

My dad's been using this rifle since the 50's and I've used it for the last 25 or 30 years so I think I owe her some love. Sure kept the freezer full!
